Engineering Mathematics is not one GATE syllabus. Six of the seven papers IAE teaches print a different Section 1, and Data Science and AI has no Engineering Mathematics section.

Engineering Mathematics is not one syllabus. In the official GATE 2027 syllabus PDFs published by IIT Madras, six of the seven papers IAE Academy teaches open with a Section 1 titled Engineering Mathematics — and each of those six prints a different set of headings under it. The seventh, Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (DA), has no Engineering Mathematics section at all: its Section 1 is titled Probability and Statistics. The official GATE 2027 Information Brochure agrees. Its pattern-of-examination table reserves 13 of the 100 marks for Engineering Mathematics in every paper except a named list, and DA is on that list. So the phrase “the GATE Engineering Mathematics syllabus”, used without a paper code, does not point at anything. What follows is what each of the seven papers prints, heading by heading, taken from the PDFs themselves.

The section titles and heading names are the PDFs' own wording, in the order printed. The marks column comes from Section 4, Pattern of Examination, GATE 2027 Information Brochure, printed page 4, which gives General Aptitude 15 marks, Engineering Mathematics 13 marks and Subject Questions 72 marks to every paper except AR, CY, DA, EY, GE, GG, MA, PH, RA, ST, XH and XL; those papers get General Aptitude 15 marks and Subject Questions 85 marks.

Does the GATE Data Science and AI paper have Engineering Mathematics?

Not as a section, and not as a reserved block of marks. The DA syllabus PDF opens at Section 1, Probability and Statistics, and runs through counting, probability axioms, sample space, Bayes theorem, distributions, the central limit theorem, confidence intervals and the z-test, t-test and chi-squared test. Linear Algebra is its own Section 2 and Calculus and Optimization its own Section 3. So DA is not a paper with less mathematics in it — mathematics is simply examined as named subject sections rather than fenced off into an Engineering Mathematics section. The brochure's marks table confirms the same thing from the other side: DA is one of the twelve papers listed as General Aptitude 15 marks and Subject Questions 85 marks, with no Engineering Mathematics line. Two separate official documents, the syllabus PDF and the brochure, say the same thing.

Source: Read from Section 1 of the six official GATE 2027 syllabus PDFs that carry an Engineering Mathematics section (CS, EC, EE, IN, CE, BT), IIT Madras, on 19 September 2026. DA is not in this grid because its Section 1 is Probability and Statistics itself, not an Engineering Mathematics section. A paper named in the third column is one whose Section 1 does not print that topic; that is a statement about the printed Engineering Mathematics section only, not about the rest of that paper's syllabus, and not about what the examination may ask.

Five oddities that only show up when the six are read side by side

  • Fourier series sits under different headings in different papers. In EE it is printed inside Calculus, between multiple integrals and vector identities. In CE it is printed inside Partial Differential Equation (PDE), as the first item. Those are the only two of the six Engineering Mathematics sections that name it at all.
  • Laplace appears in two papers, but not as the same topic. BT names Laplace transforms, under Differential Equations. CE names the two-dimensional Laplace equation, under Partial Differential Equation (PDE). A transform and an equation are different things; a candidate who reads a topic list rather than the PDF can easily merge them.
  • Tensors appear once across all six papers. They are the closing item of IN's Linear Algebra heading. No other Engineering Mathematics section names them.
  • CS is the only paper whose Engineering Mathematics section names Discrete Mathematics — propositional and first order logic, sets, relations, functions, partial orders and lattices, monoids, groups, graphs and combinatorics — and it is also the only one that names no differential equations, no vector calculus and no complex analysis.
  • CE is the only paper to split ordinary and partial differential equations into two separately named headings. EC, EE and IN keep both under a single Differential Equations heading and name partial differential equations inside it. BT is the exception at the other end: its Differential Equations heading names first order and higher order ODEs, Cauchy's and Euler's equations and Laplace transforms, and no partial differential equations at all.

The longest and the shortest Engineering Mathematics section

Measured by length of text, Civil Engineering has the longest Engineering Mathematics section of the six and Computer Science and IT the shortest — CE's runs to more than twice the length of CS's. Between them, in ascending order, sit BT, EE, EC and IN. Length is not difficulty, and the 13 marks are the same in all six, so a shorter section is not a lighter one; a short list can still be examined at depth. What the length does tell you is how little of the reading is shared. CS and CE have three heading names in common — Linear Algebra, Calculus, and Probability and Statistics — and even those three cover different ground. CS's Calculus line names limits, continuity and differentiability, maxima and minima, the mean value theorem and integration, and stops there. CE's Calculus line names all of that plus Taylor series, partial and total derivatives, gradient, divergence and curl, vector identities, directional derivatives, and line, surface and volume integrals. That is why a topic list assembled for one paper transfers so poorly to another, and why the sensible unit of work is the PDF for your own paper rather than a combined list.

What happens when the notes were written for a different paper

A file called “GATE Engineering Mathematics notes” carries no paper code, and the six syllabi are not interchangeable. A CS candidate working from an EC or EE set will spend time on differential equations, vector calculus and complex analysis, none of which CS Section 1 names, while Discrete Mathematics — the first heading CS prints — will be absent from those notes entirely. A CE candidate working from an EE set will find Fourier series listed under Calculus rather than under PDE, and will find no Numerical Methods heading at all. A DA candidate will be working towards a section that the DA paper does not have. The fix is mechanical: open the official PDF for your own paper first, and use any third-party material only against that list.

What “does not name it” means here, and what it does not

Where this post says a paper's Section 1 does not name a topic, that is a statement about the printed syllabus and nothing more: that PDF does not print that item under that section. It is not a claim that the topic cannot appear in the paper, and it is not a claim that anything changed between years. An organising institute publishes a syllabus, which is a list of what is included, not a list of exclusions. The year-on-year comparisons for each paper are kept separately, and they use the same discipline: they say an item is no longer named in 2027, and they quote both PDFs so you can read the wording yourself.

What to do with this

Download the official GATE 2027 syllabus PDF for your paper, free and without a form, from our syllabus page at /resources/gate-2027-syllabus, and read Section 1 of it in full before you buy or download anything else. It is one page of reading. If your paper is CS, EC, IN, CE or BT, also open its year-on-year comparison, indexed at /resources/gate-2027-syllabus-changes, because the 2027 listing is not identical to the 2026 one. How the 13 marks are asked (the question types, the marking and the negative marking) is covered separately at /guide/gate-2027-exam-pattern-and-marking, and the score formula at /guide/how-the-gate-score-is-calculated. Registration dates, the application fee and eligibility are at /resources/gate-2027-application-checklist and /resources/gate-2027-eligibility.

Common questions

Is the GATE Engineering Mathematics syllabus the same for every paper?+
No. Of the seven GATE 2027 papers IAE teaches, six print a Section 1 titled Engineering Mathematics and each prints a different set of headings. CS names four headings, EE and BT name five, and EC, IN and CE name six. Only Linear Algebra, Calculus and Probability and Statistics appear in all six.
How many marks is Engineering Mathematics in GATE 2027?+
13 marks out of 100. The GATE 2027 Information Brochure, on printed page 4, gives General Aptitude 15 marks, Engineering Mathematics 13 marks and Subject Questions 72 marks to every paper except AR, CY, DA, EY, GE, GG, MA, PH, RA, ST, XH and XL. Those papers get General Aptitude 15 marks and Subject Questions 85 marks instead. The brochure also notes that XE includes an Engineering Mathematics section, XE0, of 15 marks.
Does the GATE Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (DA) paper have Engineering Mathematics?+
No. The official DA syllabus PDF has no Engineering Mathematics section: its Section 1 is Probability and Statistics, its Section 2 is Linear Algebra and its Section 3 is Calculus and Optimization. The brochure agrees, listing DA among the papers with no Engineering Mathematics line in the marks split. Mathematics is still examined in DA, as named subject sections.
Which GATE paper has Discrete Mathematics in Engineering Mathematics?+
Computer Science and Information Technology (CS), and only CS. Discrete Mathematics is the first heading of its Section 1, ahead of Linear Algebra, and covers propositional and first order logic, sets, relations, functions, partial orders and lattices, monoids and groups, graphs and combinatorics. No other paper's Engineering Mathematics section names it.
Is Fourier series part of the GATE 2027 Engineering Mathematics syllabus?+
It depends on the paper, and on where you look. Of the six Engineering Mathematics sections, only EE and CE name Fourier series. EE prints it inside the Calculus heading; CE prints it inside the Partial Differential Equation (PDE) heading. In EC, Fourier series and the Fourier transform appear outside Engineering Mathematics, in Section 2, Networks, Signals and Systems.
Can I use the same Engineering Mathematics notes for two different GATE papers?+
Only where the two syllabi overlap, and the overlap is smaller than it looks. All six Engineering Mathematics sections name Linear Algebra, Calculus and Probability and Statistics, but CS names no differential equations, vector calculus or complex analysis; Numerical Methods is named only by IN, CE and BT; and tensors only by IN. Check the two official PDFs side by side before reusing material, and treat the PDF for your own paper as the list that counts.
