Answer and solution

ANSWER

The signal is not time limited but band limited, which is option (c).

Official answer: CSource: ISRO's final answer key of 15 May 2026

  1. Use the standard transform pair for a sinc pulse: . This follows because the inverse transform of a unit rectangle on is .

  2. Here , so for and for .

  3. The spectrum is exactly zero beyond (that is, ), so the signal is band limited.

  4. In the time domain, is non-zero except at the isolated points (), and its envelope only decays as . It never becomes identically zero beyond any finite time, so it is not time limited.

  5. A non-zero signal cannot be both time limited and band limited, so option (a) is impossible. Option (b) is wrong because the spectrum is bounded. Option (d) is wrong because the signal is band limited.

  6. Hence the signal is not time limited but band limited: option (c).

KEY IDEA

A sinc in time is a rectangle in frequency: the spectrum has finite support (band limited), while the time signal extends over all time (not time limited). A non-zero signal cannot be limited in both domains.

WATCH OUT FOR

Seeing the sine in the numerator and assuming the signal dies out or is time limited, or assuming a signal that decays to zero is time limited. Decaying as is not the same as being exactly zero outside a finite interval.
