Answer and solution

ANSWER

(d): the Fourier series of an even function contains only a DC term and cosine terms.

Official answer: DSource: ISRO's revised and final answer key of 16 February 2024

  1. The trigonometric Fourier series of a periodic signal of period (with ) is , where , and .

  2. Even function, : the product is (even) (odd) = odd, so its integral over a period symmetric about is zero. Hence for all . The terms left are (the DC term) and the cosine terms. So an even function has only a DC term and cosine terms. This makes (d) true and (a) false.

  3. Odd function, : the product is (odd) (even) = odd, so . Also itself is odd, so (zero average).

  4. So an odd function has only sine terms and no DC term. Option (b) is false because it names cosine terms, and (c) is false because it includes a DC term.

  5. Only (d) is a true statement.

KEY IDEA

Symmetry kills integrals: an even makes every vanish (sine terms drop out), leaving and cosines; an odd makes and every vanish, leaving only sines.

WATCH OUT FOR

Swapping the two cases (even with sine, odd with cosine), or forgetting that an odd function has zero average and so no DC term.
