GATE 2020 EE Q.8: solution and answer

GATE 2020 · EEQ.8 · 1 mark · MCQ

A lossless transmission line with 0.2 pu reactance per phase uniformly distributed along the length of the line, connecting a generator bus to a load bus, is protected up to 80 % of its length by a distance relay placed at the generator bus. The generator terminal voltage is 1 pu. There is no generation at the load bus. The threshold pu current for operation of the distance relay for a solid three phase-to-ground fault on the transmission line is closest to:

  1. (A)

    1.00

  2. (B)

    3.61

  3. (C)

    5.00

  4. (D)

    6.25

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The threshold current is 6.25 pu, option (D).

Official answer: DSource: Official answer key, GATE 2020 EE (IIT Delhi)

  1. Relay reach is 80 % of the line, so the reach impedance is .

  2. The relay is at the generator bus, and the generator terminal voltage is pu. The relay therefore sees pu. The generator is treated as an ideal 1 pu source because the question gives no source impedance.

  3. A distance relay operates when the apparent impedance is at or below its reach. The threshold current is the current for which the apparent impedance equals the reach, which is a solid three-phase fault at the 80 % point.

  4. For a solid fault at that point, the voltage at the relay equals the drop across the line section up to the fault: . The line is lossless and uniformly distributed, so the impedance up to the fault is pu.

  5. A fault nearer than 80 % gives a smaller impedance and a larger current, so the relay operates. A fault beyond 80 % gives a smaller current, so the relay does not operate. The threshold is pu, option (D).

KEY IDEA

A distance relay trips when the apparent impedance V/I is at or below its reach. At the reach point of a solid three-phase fault, the current is the relay voltage divided by the reach impedance. With a 1 pu source this is 1/(0.8 × 0.2).

WATCH OUT FOR

Using the full line reactance of 0.2 pu, which gives 5.00 pu (option C). The reach is only 80 % of the line, so the impedance is 0.16 pu. Another mistake is adding a source impedance that the question does not give.
