GATE 2026 · BTQ.24 · 1 mark · MCQ

The correct sequence of the four steps involved in anaerobic production of biogas from complex organics is:

  1. (A)

    Hydrolysis → Acidogenesis → Acetogenesis → Methanogenesis

  2. (B)

    Methanogenesis → Acetogenesis → Acidogenesis → Hydrolysis

  3. (C)

    Acidogenesis → Hydrolysis → Methanogenesis → Acetogenesis

  4. (D)

    Hydrolysis → Methanogenesis → Acidogenesis → Acetogenesis

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The correct sequence is hydrolysis, acidogenesis, acetogenesis, methanogenesis, which is option A.

Official answer: ASource: Official answer key, GATE 2026 BT (IIT Guwahati)

  1. Anaerobic digestion converts complex organic matter to biogas ( and ) in four consecutive stages, each feeding the next.

  2. Stage 1, hydrolysis: extracellular enzymes break polymers (polysaccharides, proteins, lipids) into soluble monomers such as sugars, amino acids and fatty acids. This must come first because later microbes can only take up small soluble molecules.

  3. Stage 2, acidogenesis: fermentative bacteria convert these monomers into volatile fatty acids, alcohols, and .

  4. Stage 3, acetogenesis: acetogenic bacteria oxidise the volatile fatty acids and alcohols to acetate, and .

  5. Stage 4, methanogenesis: methanogenic archaea make methane from acetate (acetoclastic route) and from plus (hydrogenotrophic route). It is last because it needs acetate and as substrates.

  6. Option A gives exactly this order. B reverses it, so methane would be made before any substrate exists. C puts acidogenesis before hydrolysis, which is wrong because polymers must be broken down first. D puts methanogenesis before the acid and acetate stages, so it has no substrate.

KEY IDEA

Anaerobic digestion runs in a fixed chain: polymers are hydrolysed to monomers, fermented to acids and alcohols, oxidised to acetate and hydrogen, and only then converted to methane. Each stage makes the substrate the next stage needs.

WATCH OUT FOR

Putting acidogenesis before hydrolysis, or placing methanogenesis early because methane is the product people think of first. Methanogens can only use acetate, and , so they must come last.
