Figure description

A two-column table with header row 'Product class' and 'Product'. Rows: P. Biofuel | 1. Cellulase; Q. Bioplastic | 2. Cephalosporin; R. Industrial enzyme | 3. Butanol; S. Antibiotic | 4. Poly-lactic acid; (blank) | 5. Rituximab.

    P-1; Q-5; R-3; S-2

  2. (B)

    P-3; Q-4; R-5; S-2

  3. (C)

    P-3; Q-2; R-1; S-5

  4. (D)

    P-3; Q-4; R-1; S-2

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The correct matching is P-3; Q-4; R-1; S-2, which is option (D).

Official answer: DSource: Official answer key, GATE 2025 BT (IIT Roorkee)

  1. Match each product class on its own, then compare with the four options.

  2. Biofuel (P): butanol (3) is a fuel. Clostridium acetobutylicum makes it in acetone-butanol-ethanol (ABE) fermentation. So P-3. Cellulase (1) is an enzyme, not a fuel, so option A (P-1) is out.

  3. Bioplastic (Q): poly-lactic acid (4) is a biodegradable polyester. It is made by polymerising lactic acid from microbial fermentation. So Q-4. Cephalosporin (2) and rituximab (5) are drugs, not plastics, so options A (Q-5) and C (Q-2) are out.

  4. Industrial enzyme (R): cellulase (1) is a bulk industrial enzyme used in textiles, detergents, paper and biomass saccharification. So R-1. Rituximab is a therapeutic antibody, not an industrial enzyme, so option B (R-5) is out.

  5. Antibiotic (S): cephalosporin (2) is a beta-lactam antibiotic originally obtained from the fungus Acremonium (Cephalosporium). So S-2. Rituximab (5) is an anti-CD20 monoclonal antibody used as a drug, not an antibiotic, so option C (S-5) is out.

  6. The full matching is P-3; Q-4; R-1; S-2. Item 5 (rituximab) is an extra item that matches none of the four classes. This is option D.

KEY IDEA

Classify each product by what it is. A fuel such as butanol is a biofuel, poly-lactic acid is a bioplastic, cellulase is an industrial enzyme, and cephalosporin is an antibiotic. Rituximab is a therapeutic monoclonal antibody and fits none of the four classes.

WATCH OUT FOR

Treating rituximab as an antibiotic because it is a drug made by a microbial or cell-culture process. It is an anti-CD20 monoclonal antibody, not an antibiotic. Another slip is placing cellulase under biofuel because it is used to make bioethanol. The enzyme is an industrial enzyme, and the fuel itself is butanol or ethanol.
