GATE 2020 IN question 4: A single-loop series circuit.Tap to open full size
Figure from the GATE 2020 IN paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

A single-loop series circuit. On the left is an independent voltage source labelled V_B, drawn as a circle with its + terminal at the top and its - terminal at the bottom. From the + terminal the top wire runs right through a resistor labelled '100 Ω, 1 W'. An arrow labelled I points to the right along this top branch, so I flows clockwise out of the + terminal. The top wire then goes down the right side through a resistor labelled '2 Ω, 0.5 W', and back along the bottom wire through a resistor labelled '1 Ω, 0.25 W' to the - terminal of V_B. All three resistors carry the same current I. There are no other elements or branches.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The safe maximum current is , option (C). The resistor sets this limit.

Official answer: CSource: Official answer key, GATE 2020 IN (IIT Delhi)

  1. One loop, one current. The circuit has a single loop, so the , and resistors are in series and all carry the same current (KCL at every node).

  2. Current limit of each resistor. A resistor dissipates , so the largest current it can carry without exceeding its rated power is .

  3. :

  4. :

  5. :

  6. The weakest element sets the limit. Every resistor must stay within its rating, so the common series current can be no larger than the smallest of these limits: .

  7. Check. At : (exactly at its rating), and , both well below their ratings. The answer is (C).

KEY IDEA

In a series circuit every element carries the same current. Work out each resistor's own current limit, . The safe current is the smallest of these limits, because the most restrictive element decides it.

WATCH OUT FOR

Adding the power ratings (1.75 W) and the resistances (103 Ω) and computing . That current would overload the 100 Ω resistor, since each rating applies only to its own resistor. Another mistake is taking the largest limit (0.5 A, option B) when the smallest one governs.
