GATE 2020 IN question 30: A planar circuit with three meshes, all mesh currents drawn clockwise.Tap to open full size
Figure from the GATE 2020 IN paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

A planar circuit with three meshes, all mesh currents drawn clockwise. There are three nodes on a middle horizontal line: left node L, centre node M, right node R. There is a bottom rail and a top rail. Left vertical branch: source V_1 between the bottom rail (−) and node L (+, top). A plain wire runs from node L up to the top-left corner of the top rail. Top rail: source V_2 drawn horizontally, − terminal on the left, + terminal on the right, running from the top-left corner to the top-right corner. Right upper branch: a 1 Ω resistor from the top-right corner down to node R. Middle horizontal: a 1 Ω resistor between L and M, and a 1 Ω resistor between M and R. Centre vertical: a 2 Ω resistor from M down to the bottom rail. Right vertical branch: source V_3 between node R (+, top) and the bottom rail (−). Meshes: I_1 is the lower-left mesh (V_1, L–M 1 Ω, 2 Ω, bottom rail). I_2 is the top mesh (V_2, right 1 Ω, M–R 1 Ω, L–M 1 Ω, left wire). I_3 is the lower-right mesh (M–R 1 Ω, V_3, bottom rail, 2 Ω).

  1. (A)

  2. (B)

  3. (C)

  4. (D)

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The mesh equations are , which is option (A).

Official answer: ASource: Official answer key, GATE 2020 IN (IIT Delhi)

  1. Self-resistances (diagonal entries). Mesh 1: . Mesh 2: (the right plus the two middle resistors). Mesh 3: .

  2. Mutual resistances (off-diagonal entries). Meshes 1 and 2 share the L–M . Meshes 2 and 3 share the M–R . Meshes 1 and 3 share the . All three currents are clockwise, so in every shared branch the two currents flow in opposite directions, and every mutual term is negative: , , .

  3. KVL in mesh 1 (clockwise). Going up through from − to + is a rise of :

  4. KVL in mesh 2 (clockwise). Going left to right along the top through runs from − to +, a rise of :

  5. KVL in mesh 3 (clockwise). Going down the right side through runs from + to −, a drop of :

  6. Matrix form. This is option (A). Option (C) has the wrong sign on . Option (B) has the wrong sign on and on . Option (D) has the wrong self-resistances and , and the wrong sign on .

KEY IDEA

When every mesh current in a resistive network without dependent sources is drawn in the same direction, you can write the mesh equations by inspection. The resistance matrix is symmetric. Each diagonal entry is the total resistance around that mesh and is always positive. Each off-diagonal entry is minus the resistance the two meshes share. Each right-hand-side entry is the net source voltage rise met when you go around the mesh in the direction of its current.

WATCH OUT FOR

Writing instead of . The clockwise current goes down through from its + terminal to its − terminal, so is a drop in that mesh and appears as on the source side. Another mistake is accepting a negative diagonal entry (options B and C). A self-resistance can never be negative, and the matrix must be symmetric. Those two checks rule out B and C straight away.
