GATE 2025 IN question 65: A sinusoidal voltage source 100 ∠ 0° V sits on the left vertical side.Tap to open full size
Figure from the GATE 2025 IN paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

A sinusoidal voltage source 100 ∠ 0° V sits on the left vertical side. No polarity marks are printed. From the top of the source, a series capacitor -j10 Ω and then a series resistor 10 Ω run along the top wire to node A. From node A, two branches go down to the bottom wire, which returns to the bottom of the source: (1) a middle vertical branch with a 5 Ω resistor in series with a capacitor -j5 Ω (resistor above, capacitor below); (2) a right vertical branch with an inductor j5 Ω. The two vertical branches are in parallel between node A and the bottom wire.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The active power supplied by the source is 600.0 W.

Official answer: 590 to 610Source: Official answer key, GATE 2025 IN (IIT Roorkee)

  1. Read the circuit as one series loop. The source drives and in series with a parallel pair between node A and the bottom wire. The pair is in parallel with .

  2. Combine the parallel pair with the product-over-sum rule:

  3. Add the series elements to get the total impedance seen by the source: , so .

  4. Apply Ohm's law in phasor form: so .

  5. Compute the complex power delivered by the source: This gives . Equivalently, . The source phasor is taken as rms, the usual GATE convention.

  6. Check by adding up the power absorbed in each resistor. . The branch carries , so . The resistors absorb . This matches the source power, so the answer is .

KEY IDEA

Reduce the network to one impedance seen by the source, . The active power is , which equals . Only resistors absorb active power, so adding over the two resistors checks the answer independently.

WATCH OUT FOR

One slip is to report the apparent power , or to use without conjugating the current. Another is to treat as a peak value and halve the result to . GATE phasors are rms unless the question says otherwise. A third is to use the source current for the resistor. That resistor carries only its branch current, , which here happens to have the same magnitude as the source current.
