Which one of the following options represents the products of light reactions of photosynthesis in plants?
- (A)
O2/NADH/H2
- (B)
O2/NADP+/CO2
- (C)
O2/NADPH/ATP
- (D)
O2/NADP+/ATP
Which one of the following options represents the products of light reactions of photosynthesis in plants?
O2/NADH/H2
O2/NADP+/CO2
O2/NADPH/ATP
O2/NADP+/ATP
ANSWER
The products of the light reactions are O2, NADPH and ATP, so the answer is option C.
Official answer: CSource: Official answer key, GATE 2026 BT (IIT Guwahati)
The light reactions take place in the thylakoid membranes. Photosystem II splits water (photolysis), releasing , protons and electrons.
Electrons pass along the chain to photosystem I and finally reduce to (ferredoxin-NADP reductase).
The proton gradient across the thylakoid membrane drives ATP synthase, so ATP is made by photophosphorylation.
The products of the light reactions are therefore , and ATP, which is option C.
Option A is wrong. Plants make , not , and no is released.
Option B is wrong. is the electron acceptor, so it is used up rather than made. is a substrate of the Calvin cycle, not a product of the light reactions.
Option D is wrong. is the reactant. The reduced form is the product, and it is used with ATP in the Calvin cycle.
KEY IDEA
The light reactions make ATP and NADPH and release O2 from water. The Calvin cycle then uses ATP and NADPH to fix CO2.
WATCH OUT FOR
Mixing up NADP+ (the oxidised acceptor) with NADPH (the product). Another slip is writing NADH, which belongs to respiration, in place of NADPH.
