GATE 2024 EC GA Q.10: solution and answer

GATE 2024 · ECGA Q.10 · 2 marks · MCQ

Two identical sheets A and B, of dimensions , can be folded into half using two distinct operations, FO1 or FO2.

In FO1, the axis of folding remains parallel to the initial long edge, and in FO2, the axis of folding remains parallel to the initial short edge.

If sheet A is folded twice using FO1, and sheet B is folded twice using FO2, the ratio of the perimeters of the final shapes of A and B is

  1. (A)

    14:11

  2. (B)

    11:14

  3. (C)

    18:11

  4. (D)

    11:18

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The ratio of the perimeters of A and B is 14:11, option (A).

Official answer: ASource: Official answer key, GATE 2024 EC (IISc Bengaluru)

  1. When a sheet is folded in half along an axis parallel to one pair of edges, those edges keep their length and the side at right angles to the axis is halved.

  2. FO1 folds along an axis parallel to the initial long edge (). The side stays the same and the side is halved at each fold: .

  3. Sheet A after two FO1 folds measures , so its perimeter is .

  4. FO2 folds along an axis parallel to the initial short edge (). The side stays the same and the side is halved at each fold: . After the first fold the sheet is , and the question fixes the axis by the initial short edge, so the second fold still halves the side.

  5. Sheet B after two FO2 folds measures , so its perimeter is .

  6. Ratio of the perimeters: The answer is 14:11, option (A).

KEY IDEA

Folding in half along an axis parallel to an edge keeps that edge's length and halves the side at right angles to the axis. The question defines both operations by the INITIAL edges, so each operation always halves the same original side: FO1 halves the 16 cm side and FO2 halves the 24 cm side.

WATCH OUT FOR

Two traps. (1) Mixing up which side gets halved: an axis parallel to the long edge halves the SHORT side, not the long side. Swapping them gives A = 6 x 16 and B = 24 x 4, the ratio 11:14, which is option (B). (2) Re-reading 'short edge' after the first fold: once B is folded to 12 x 16, the 16 cm side is now the longer one. If you then halve that side you get 12 x 8, perimeter 40, and a ratio of 7:5, which is not an option. The word 'initial' fixes the axis to the original 16 cm edge.
