Bird : Nest :: Bee : _______
Select the correct option to complete the analogy.
Kennel
Hammock
Hive
Lair
ANSWER
(C) Hive. A nest is where a bird lives and raises its young, and a hive is where bees live and raise theirs.
Official answer: CSource: Official answer key, GATE 2025 IN (IIT Roorkee)
Name the relation in the first pair. A nest is the home a bird builds for itself, where it lives and raises its young. So the relation is creature : the dwelling it lives in and raises its young in.
Apply the same relation to the second pair. We need the home in which a bee lives and its colony raises its young.
Check each option. (A) Kennel: a shelter that people build for a dog. It is not a bee's home, so the relation fails.
(B) Hammock: a hanging bed that people use. It is not an animal's home at all.
(D) Lair: the den of a wild beast such as a lion or a wolf. A bee does not live in a lair.
(C) Hive: the place where a colony of bees lives, stores its wax comb and raises its brood. The bees build the comb themselves, just as a bird builds its nest.
Only Hive keeps the same relation, so Bird : Nest :: Bee : Hive. The answer is (C).
KEY IDEA
Put the first pair's relation into one sentence ("a nest is the home of a bird") and then test every option in that same sentence for the second word ("a ___ is the home of a bee"). Only the option that fits the sentence exactly is correct.
WATCH OUT FOR
Picking Lair or Kennel only because each is some animal's home. That matches the general category (animal home) but not the specific animal. A kennel belongs to a dog and a lair to a wild beast. Only a hive belongs to a bee.
