A surface is given by and and are unit normal vectors to the surface at the point .
Which of the following vectors can be , where and are the unit vectors along x, y and z axes, respectively?
ANSWER
The answer is (D): . It is the gradient of at , which is , divided by its magnitude .
Official answer: DSource: Official answer key, GATE 2026 EC (IIT Guwahati)
Write the surface as a level surface: . The point is . It lies on the surface because .
The gradient of is normal to the level surface : .
At : .
Its magnitude is .
Divide by the magnitude to get the unit normal:
Check: , so this is a unit vector. It is option (D), and is the other unit normal.
Rule out the others. (A) has magnitude and (C) has magnitude , so neither is a unit vector. (B) has magnitude , and it points the wrong way too: its ratio is , but the normal needs . The answer is (D).
KEY IDEA
Write the surface as a level surface . The gradient at a point on it is normal to the surface there, and are the two unit normals. An option has to pass two tests: its components must be in the same ratio as , and its magnitude must be 1.
WATCH OUT FOR
Stopping at and choosing an option by direction alone, without dividing by . The question asks for a unit normal, and (A) and (C) are not unit vectors. Other slips are reading the point as instead of , and getting the sign of the term wrong when moving across. Either one puts a spurious component into the normal or changes its direction.
