Count the observations. There are values. Since is odd, the median is a single middle value, not the average of two.
Sort the data in ascending order: (Check: the list still has nine entries, with one , one , two s, three s and two s, the same as the given set.)
For odd the median is at position , so take the 5th value of the sorted list.
Read off the 5th value. The first four are , and the 5th is . So the median is .
Check: four values () sit before the 5th position and four () sit after it, so the median splits the data in half as it should. is already an integer, so rounding leaves it unchanged.
KEY IDEA
The median is the middle value of the data once it is sorted. For an odd count it is the value at position in the sorted list, and repeated values each keep their own place.
WATCH OUT FOR
Taking the middle entry of the list as printed, without sorting it first. The 5th printed entry is , which is wrong. Two other slips: collapsing repeated values into one (the distinct values have middle , also wrong), and giving the mean (, which rounds to ) when the question asks for the median.
