GATE 2018 · EEQ.30 · 2 marks · MCQ

The per-unit power output of a salient-pole generator which is connected to an infinite bus, is given by the expression, , where is the load angle. Newton-Raphson method is used to calculate the value of for pu. If the initial guess is , then its value (in degree) at the end of the first iteration is

  1. (A)

  2. (B)

  3. (C)

  4. (D)

Answer and solution

ANSWER

After one Newton-Raphson iteration from , , which is option (C).

Official answer: CSource: Official answer key, GATE 2018 EE (IIT Guwahati)

  1. Write the equation as a root-finding problem: .

  2. Differentiate, keeping the chain-rule factor of 2 on the second term: .

  3. Evaluate at : .

  4. .

  5. Newton-Raphson update: . The correction is . It is in radians because is the derivative with respect to measured in radians.

  6. Convert to degrees: .

  7. , which is option (C).

KEY IDEA

Newton-Raphson on gives . Differentiating the sine terms gives per radian, so the correction comes out in radians and has to be converted to degrees before you subtract it from .

WATCH OUT FOR

There are two traps. (1) Subtracting the radian correction straight from gives . (2) Dropping the chain-rule factor, i.e. writing instead of , gives about . Neither result is among the options.
