ANSWER
(C): the eigenvalues of are and its eigenvectors are .
Official answer: CSource: Official answer key, GATE 2023 EC (IIT Kanpur)
Write in terms of . Since is invertible, .
A similarity transformation does not change eigenvalues. Using : because . So and have the same characteristic polynomial, and the eigenvalues of are exactly the . The extra factor in (A) is wrong: it would only give the right values in the special case .
For the eigenvectors, start from and substitute :
Premultiply both sides by :
, because is invertible (its null space is only ) and an eigenvector is non-zero. So is an eigenvector of for the eigenvalue . In general itself (B) and (D) are not: would be an eigenvector of , not of .
So the eigenvalues of are and its eigenvectors are . This is option (C).
KEY IDEA
Similar matrices have the same characteristic polynomial, so they have the same eigenvalues. Their eigenvectors are different, though: they are linked by the same matrix that links the two matrices. Write . If , then , so each eigenvector of is times an eigenvector of .
WATCH OUT FOR
The usual slip is getting the direction of wrong. Students see and pick (D), when solving for gives and so the eigenvectors are . The other slip is assuming similar matrices share eigenvectors as well as eigenvalues (B). To check the direction, substitute the answer back: .
