Figure from the GATE 2023 EE paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

Two arrows drawn from a common tail at the origin, labelled (0, 0). Vector u runs from (0, 0) up and to the right to its head, labelled (4, 3), with the label u beside the arrowhead. Vector v runs horizontally to the right from (0, 0) to its head, labelled (5, 0), with the label v beside the arrowhead. No axes are drawn. Both vectors have length 5, and u lies above v at an angle of tan^-1(3/4) measured anticlockwise from v.

  1. (A)

  2. (B)

  3. (C)

  4. (D)

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The correct choice is (A), . It is the only option with . Geometrically, it is the clockwise rotation by .

Official answer: ASource: Official answer key, GATE 2023 EE (IIT Kanpur)

  1. From the figure, both vectors start at the origin, so and .

  2. The single condition gives only two equations for the four entries of , so it does not fix on its own. What we can settle is which of the four given options satisfies it. The reliable method is to multiply each option by .

  3. Option (A): So (A) works.

  4. The other options fail. (B) gives . (C) gives . (D) gives . Its second component is 0, but its first is not 5. None of these equals , so (A) is the only correct option.

  5. Why (A) makes geometric sense: , and makes an angle above the x-axis with and . A clockwise rotation by brings down onto the x-axis without changing its length. That rotation is , which is exactly matrix (A).

  6. Matrix (B) is , the anticlockwise rotation. It turns further up, to angle : . This agrees with the product in step 4. Answer: (A).

KEY IDEA

With four options to choose from, check by multiplying each option by . As a sanity check: and are both 5 long, and turning clockwise by (with , ) lands it on . That rotation is .

WATCH OUT FOR

Picking (B) because it looks like the textbook rotation matrix . That matrix rotates anticlockwise, but has to turn clockwise to reach . (B) actually sends to . A second trap is checking only that the y-component comes out 0: (D) passes that test but gives , not .
