The value of the following complex integral, with representing the unit circle centered at origin in the counterclockwise sense, is:
ANSWER
The integral equals , option (C).
Official answer: CSource: Official answer key, GATE 2020 EE (IIT Delhi)
Factor the denominator: , so . The numerator is non-zero at (value ) and at (value ), so both are simple poles.
Locate the poles relative to , the circle : lies inside (), while lies outside (). Neither pole is on the contour, and only contributes.
Residue at the simple pole :
Cauchy's residue theorem for a closed contour traversed counterclockwise:
Hence the integral equals , which is option (C).
KEY IDEA
Residue theorem: times the sum of the residues at the poles inside . Here only the simple pole lies inside , and its residue is .
WATCH OUT FOR
Counting the pole at as well. It lies outside the unit circle, and adding its residue gives , which is not an option. The other common slip is a sign error in the residue, and not . Getting that sign wrong, or taking the contour clockwise, gives , the distractor (D).
