The number of elements in the set is finite and more than one.

  2. (B)

The number of elements in the set is infinite.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The minimizers are every point on the line , which is an infinite set. The answer is (B).

Official answer: BSource: Official answer key, GATE 2025 EE (IIT Roorkee)

  1. Stationary points need : and .

  2. Both conditions are the same single equation, . So the stationary points are every point on the line , not one isolated point.

  3. Check that these points are minima. The Hessian is and , so the second-derivative test cannot decide. Use the structure of instead.

  4. depends only on : (completing the square).

  5. So for every , with equality exactly when . The global minimum value is .

  6. Hence , a straight line (for example , , , and so on). It has infinitely many elements, so option (B) is correct.

KEY IDEA

Here depends on and only through . Minimise the one-variable function to get . Every with gives that same minimum, so the minimizers make up a whole line.

WATCH OUT FOR

Setting and and expecting two independent equations with one solution, which leads to (D). The two equations are identical, so they fix only . Another trap is reading the singular Hessian () as "no minimum exists" and picking (C). A zero determinant only means the test cannot decide, and completing the square shows with equality all along the line.
