Consider the function for , where denotes the maximum of and . Which of the following statements is/are true?

  1. (A)

    is not differentiable.

  2. (B)

is differentiable and its derivative is continuous.

  3. (C)

Answer and solution

ANSWER

Only (B) is true. is differentiable everywhere with , which is continuous. has a corner at (left slope , right slope ), so it is not differentiable there.

Official answer: BSource: Official answer key, GATE 2024 EE (IISc Bengaluru)

  1. Write it piecewise. for and for , so

  2. Away from each piece is a polynomial, so for and for .

  3. At , use the definition with . The right-hand limit is and the left-hand limit is . They agree, so and is differentiable at every . That makes (A) false.

  4. So Since , and , is continuous at (and it is clearly continuous elsewhere). That makes (B) true and (C) false.

  5. Is itself differentiable at ? Right derivative: . Left derivative: . Since , does not exist: is a ramp with a corner at the origin.

  6. So is not differentiable at , and (D) is false. is continuously differentiable but not twice differentiable. Only (B) is correct.

KEY IDEA

Write piecewise ( for , for ) and test the junction with the limit definition, first for and then for . Squaring the ramp smooths its corner by one order: is continuous, but still has the ramp's corner, so does not exist.

WATCH OUT FOR

Seeing and assuming a corner, which gives (A), or seeing the smooth-looking and ticking (D). The corner of is removed from by squaring, but it reappears one level down in . The one-sided second derivatives at are and , so is not differentiable there.
