Answer and solution

ANSWER

(D) is differentiable but its first derivative is not differentiable at .

Official answer: DSource: Official answer key, GATE 2018 EE (IIT Guwahati)

  1. The two branches combine into one formula, . For , , and for , .

  2. Continuity at : , so is continuous at . This rules out (A).

  3. Differentiability at , from the definition of the derivative: The limit exists, so is differentiable at . This rules out (B).

  4. The first derivative everywhere: for , for , and . Taken together, .

  5. Continuity of at : , so is continuous at . This rules out (C).

  6. Differentiability of at , from the one-sided derivatives: The two sides differ, so is not differentiable at . The graph of has a corner there.

  7. So is differentiable and is continuous at , but is not differentiable there. The answer is (D).

KEY IDEA

. Its derivative is , which is continuous at but has a corner there. So has a continuous first derivative, but no second derivative exists at : the one-sided second derivatives are and . When a function is defined in pieces, test each level of smoothness at the joint separately with one-sided limits.

WATCH OUT FOR

Mixing up with and choosing (B). Another mistake is to see that the branch derivatives and come from different formulas and conclude that jumps, which gives (C). In fact both branches give at , so is continuous there. What fails is the next level: the slopes of are and .
