Answer and solution

ANSWER

.

Official answer: -1.7 to -1.5Source: Official answer key, GATE 2024 EE (IISc Bengaluru)

  1. Field of a point charge (Coulomb's law): , where points from the charge to the field point . Write , with . cancels at the end, so its value is never needed.

  2. Charge at : and . Charge at : and .

  3. By symmetry the -components cancel and the -components add:

  4. Charge at : , so

  5. Superposition, with the total field set to zero (divide through by ):

  6. Exact value: , so .

  7. Sign check: both charges push in the direction. The third charge sits below , so it has to pull downward, toward itself, and that needs . Rounded to 1 decimal place, .

KEY IDEA

Add the fields by superposition. Because the two equal charges sit symmetrically about the -axis, their -components cancel at and only a net field is left. The third charge lies on the -axis, so its field is purely along . Setting the -components to sum to zero gives , and and cancel out.

WATCH OUT FOR

The usual slip is adding the full magnitudes of the two symmetric charges instead of only their -components . That gives . The other common error is measuring the third charge's distance as or instead of , or dropping the negative sign. A positive would push further in and could never cancel the field.
