  2. (B)

  3. (C)

  4. (D)

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The total electric flux leaving the cylinder is , which is option (D).

Official answer: DSource: Official answer key, GATE 2020 EE (IIT Delhi)

  1. The total flux leaving a closed surface is (divergence theorem). The volume is , , .

  2. Here , , . The divergence in cylindrical coordinates is The term is zero because does not depend on .

  3. The volume element is , so the integrand becomes .

  4. Check by integrating over the three faces. Curved side (, outward normal , ): . Top (, outward normal , ): . Bottom (): , so the flux is . The component is tangential to every face and contributes nothing.

  5. Total: , which agrees with the volume integral. The answer is option (D).

KEY IDEA

The flux out of a closed surface is the volume integral of (divergence theorem). In cylindrical coordinates the radial term is , and the extra in cancels the . The component carries no flux through any face of a cylinder centred on the z-axis.

WATCH OUT FOR

Taking (as if in Cartesian coordinates), which drops the radial term and gives , which is not an option. Leaving out the Jacobian in is another route to a wrong answer. Other slips are giving the top face the wrong sign (its outward normal is and there, so its flux is negative) and counting flux from , which is tangential to every face.
