GATE 2024 IN Q.62: solution and answer

GATE 2024 · INQ.62 · 2 marks · NAT

A three-phase squirrel-cage induction motor has a starting torque of 100% of the full load torque and a maximum torque of 300% of the full load torque. Neglecting the stator impedance, the slip at the maximum torque is ________% (rounded off to two decimal places).

See the question in the paper

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The slip at maximum torque is 17.16%.

Official answer: 17.00 to 17.30Source: Official answer key, GATE 2024 IN (IISc Bengaluru)

  1. Neglecting stator impedance, the torque-slip relation near the maximum-torque point is

  2. At starting, , so

  3. Given and , so .

  4. Substituting:

  5. Solving the quadratic:

  6. Since slip at maximum torque must satisfy (starting torque at is only 100% of full load torque, well below the 300% peak, so the peak lies at a smaller slip than the starting slip), the valid root is

  7. Expressed as a percentage: .

KEY IDEA

With stator impedance neglected, the torque-slip relation about the maximum-torque point is T/Tmax = 2/(s/s_maxT + s_maxT/s). Evaluating at starting slip (s=1) with the given ratio Tst/Tmax = 1/3 gives a quadratic in s_maxT; the physically valid root (0 < s_maxT < 1) is the answer.

WATCH OUT FOR

Picking the wrong root of the quadratic (taking s = 3 + 2√2 ≈ 5.83, which is unphysical since slip cannot exceed 1 on this branch) instead of s = 3 - 2√2 ≈ 0.1716.
