GATE 2018 EE Q.24: solution and answer

GATE 2018 · EEQ.24 · 1 mark · NAT

A separately excited dc motor has an armature resistance . The field excitation is kept constant. At an armature voltage of 100 V, the motor produces a torque of 500 Nm at zero speed. Neglecting all mechanical losses, the no-load speed of the motor (in radians/s) for an armature voltage of 150 V is ______ (up to 2 decimal places).

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The no-load speed of the motor for an armature voltage of 150 V is 600 rad/s.

Official answer: 600.0Source: Official answer key, GATE 2018 EE (IIT Guwahati)

  1. At zero speed the back-emf is zero (), so the entire applied voltage drops across the armature resistance:

  2. Using the stall torque to find the torque constant (which also relates back-emf to speed, since the field excitation is unchanged):

  3. At no load, with all mechanical losses neglected, the developed torque must be zero. Since , this forces the no-load armature current to be zero:

  4. With there is no drop across , so the back-emf equals the applied voltage:

  5. The no-load speed follows from :

KEY IDEA

At zero speed the back-emf is zero, so the entire applied voltage drops across armature resistance, fixing the stall current and hence the torque constant (from ). At no load (no mechanical losses, so no-load torque = 0), the armature current must be zero, so the full new armature voltage appears as back-emf; speed then follows from .

WATCH OUT FOR

Assuming the armature current found from the stall condition (2000 A) is reused at the new voltage, or forgetting that at no-load with no mechanical losses the torque — and hence — must be exactly zero, which is what makes at no load.
