Let be a simple, undirected graph. A vertex cover of is a subset such that for every , or . Let the size of the smallest vertex cover in be . Let be any vertex cover of size .

For a vertex , which of the following constraints will always ensure that ?

  1. (A)

The degree of is at least

  2. (B)

The vertex is on a path of length

  3. (C)

The vertex is on a cycle of length

  4. (D)

The vertex is a part of a clique of size

Answer and solution

ANSWER

Only option A always ensures , so the answer is (A).

Official answer: ASource: Official answer key, GATE 2026 CS1 (IIT Guwahati)

  1. Let be a vertex cover of the smallest size . If a vertex , every edge must be covered by , so all neighbours of lie in .

  2. (A) Suppose and . Then contains at least distinct neighbours of , so , a contradiction. Hence for every minimum cover . A always ensures .

  3. (B) Take the path . The smallest cover is , so , and the path has length . The end vertex is on this path but . B fails.

  4. (C) Take the triangle , a cycle of length . Its smallest cover has size , so the cycle has length . The cover has size and omits , which lies on the cycle. C fails.

  5. (D) Take with vertices . Again . The vertex is part of the clique of size . The minimum cover omits . D fails.

  6. Only (A) is guaranteed, so the answer is A.

KEY IDEA

A vertex left out of a cover forces all its neighbours into it, so a vertex with more than neighbours cannot be left out of a cover of size .

WATCH OUT FOR

Assuming that lying on a long path or cycle, or inside a clique, forces membership. In a cycle or clique, a cover can skip any one vertex, so the structure alone does not force into .
