If a relational decomposition is not dependency-preserving, which one of the following relational operators will be executed more frequently in order to maintain the dependencies?
Selection
Projection
Join
Set union
ANSWER
The relational operator executed more frequently is the join, option (C).

A decomposition of into is dependency-preserving if every functional dependency of can be enforced inside a single decomposed relation, i.e. , where is the projection of onto .
If the decomposition is not dependency-preserving, at least one dependency has its attributes spread over two or more decomposed relations, so no single table can verify it.
To check such a dependency after an insert or update, the attributes of and must first be brought side by side in one relation. The operator that combines tuples of different relations on common attributes is the (natural) join: . The dependency is then tested on the joined result.
Selection () and projection () act on one relation and cannot bring attributes of different relations together. Union () stacks tuples of relations that have the same schema; it does not place attributes of different relations side by side. So none of these helps check a dependency that spans relations.
Hence the join is the operator executed more frequently to maintain the dependencies. Answer: (C).
KEY IDEA
Dependency preservation means each functional dependency can be checked inside one decomposed table. If it is not preserved, checking a spanning dependency needs the tables recombined, which is a join.
WATCH OUT FOR
Choosing projection because decomposition itself is done by projection. Projection is used to create the decomposition. Checking a dependency that spans relations needs the pieces joined back together.
