GATE 2023 CS Q.17: solution and answer

GATE 2023 · CSQ.17 · 1 mark · MCQ

Suppose two hosts are connected by a point-to-point link and they are configured to use Stop-and-Wait protocol for reliable data transfer. Identify in which one of the following scenarios, the utilization of the link is the lowest.

  1. (A)

Longer link length and lower transmission rate

  2. (B)

Longer link length and higher transmission rate

  3. (C)

Shorter link length and lower transmission rate

  4. (D)

Shorter link length and higher transmission rate

Answer and solution

ANSWER

Option (B): a longer link with a higher transmission rate gives the lowest utilization.

Official answer: BSource: Official answer key, GATE 2023 CS (IIT Kanpur)

  1. Stop-and-Wait sends one frame and then waits for its acknowledgement, so the link carries data only during the transmission time in each cycle of length .

  2. Utilization , where .

  3. Here (frame size over transmission rate) and (link length over propagation speed), so .

  4. falls as rises. grows with a longer link ( larger) and with a higher transmission rate ( larger), since the frame size and speed do not change between the options.

  5. So is lowest when the link is longer and the transmission rate is higher, which is option (B).

  6. Check the other options. In (A) and (D) one factor raises and the other lowers it, so is in between. In (C) both factors lower , so (C) has the highest utilization.

KEY IDEA

In Stop-and-Wait, with . Utilization is lowest when is largest, that is, a long propagation delay and a short transmission time (a fast link).

WATCH OUT FOR

Thinking a faster link always improves utilization. A higher rate shortens but leaves unchanged, so the sender idles for a larger share of each cycle and drops.
