ISRO CS 2025 Q.37: solution and answer

ISRO 2025 · CSQ.37 · 1 mark · MCQ

37. A communication system is designed using the following three 5 bit words as the only valid codewords and uses error correction using hamming distance.
Codeword A: 00000
Codeword B: 01110
Codeword C: 11000
During operation, receiver gets the word 01000. What would the system conclude?

  1. (A)

It will correct to codeword A

  2. (B)

It will correct to codeword B

  3. (C)

It will correct to codeword C

  4. (D)

It will be unable to correct the error

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The received word is at distance from both codeword A and codeword C, so the system cannot correct the error. Answer: (d).

Official answer: DSource: ISRO's final answer key of 15 May 2026

  1. Minimum-distance decoding picks the valid codeword nearest to the received word, where distance is the number of bit positions in which two words differ (Hamming distance).

  2. Received word against A : only the second bit differs, so .

  3. Received word against B : the third and fourth bits differ, so .

  4. Received word against C : only the first bit differs, so .

  5. The nearest codewords are A and C, both at distance . There is no unique closest codeword, so the decoder has no basis to prefer one.

  6. This agrees with the code's distances: , , , so . A code corrects errors only if ; with it can detect a single-bit error but cannot correct it.

  7. The receiver can tell that is not a valid codeword but cannot decide between A and C. Options (a) and (c) each choose one of two equally near codewords, and (b) is farther away at distance , so the answer is (d).

KEY IDEA

Nearest-codeword decoding corrects an error only when exactly one codeword is closest to the received word. A code with detects single-bit errors but cannot correct them.

WATCH OUT FOR

Picking the first codeword found at the smallest distance, or the one that looks most similar, without checking whether another codeword is equally close.
