ISRO 2023 · CSQ.13 · 1 mark · MCQ

In a computer network using CSMA/CD, the minimum frame size for data transfer is 1500 bytes. What will be the data transfer speed in this network over 1 Km cable, if the signal speed in the cable is 250000 Km/sec and no repeaters are used in this network?

  1. (A)

    1 Gbps

  2. (B)

    100 Mbps

  3. (C)

    500 Mbps

  4. (D)

    1.5 Gbps

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The data transfer speed is , option (d).

Official answer: DSource: ISRO's revised and final answer key of 16 February 2024

  1. For CSMA/CD the sender must still be transmitting when a collision signal can return from the far end. So the minimum frame transmission time must be at least the round-trip propagation time: , that is .

  2. One-way propagation delay: .

  3. Round-trip time: .

  4. Minimum frame size: bits.

  5. Rearranging gives , so is the highest rate at which a frame of this minimum size still lasts for the whole round trip. The rate at which the minimum frame lasts exactly is

  6. Check with the options: at , exactly. At , and the transmission times are , and , all longer than . Those rates are slower than the limit, so the frame is longer than it needs to be. The network speed that matches the stated minimum frame size and cable is , option (d).

KEY IDEA

CSMA/CD requires , so the rate that fits the minimum frame to the round trip exactly (and is the highest allowed) is .

WATCH OUT FOR

Using one-way delay instead of the round trip (giving ), or forgetting to convert bytes to bits and km to metres or seconds correctly.
