Answer and solution
ANSWER
The MAP threshold is .
Official answer: -0.5Source: Official answer key, GATE 2018 EC (IIT Guwahati)
The noise density is for and zero elsewhere. Given , is uniform on with density . Given , is uniform on with density .
The MAP rule decides when . Otherwise it decides .
For we have and . Only can have produced , so decide .
For we have and . Only can have produced , so decide .
For both likelihoods equal , so the priors decide. Compare with . Since , decide .
So for and for . Matching this to the form for and for gives
KEY IDEA
With uniform noise the two conditional densities are flat and overlap only on . Outside the overlap only one symbol is possible. Inside it the likelihoods are equal, so the larger prior ( for ) wins. The threshold is therefore the lower edge of the overlap.
WATCH OUT FOR
Setting the threshold at the midpoint , which is the maximum-likelihood or equal-prior answer. That ignores the unequal priors. With a flat likelihood in the overlap the prior alone decides, so the whole overlap goes to the more probable symbol.
