GATE 2018 · ECQ.17 · 1 mark · NAT

A binary source generates symbols which are transmitted over a noisy channel. The probability of transmitting is 0.5. Input to the threshold detector is . The probability density function of the noise is shown below. If the detection threshold is zero, then the probability of error (correct to two decimal places) is ______.

GATE 2018 EC question 17: Plot of f_N(n) versus n: a triangular pdf.Tap to open full size
Figure from the GATE 2018 EC paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

Plot of f_N(n) versus n: a triangular pdf. Horizontal axis n with marked points -2 and 2; vertical axis f_N(n). The pdf is zero at n=-2, rises linearly to a peak of 0.5 at n=0, then falls linearly to zero at n=2 (symmetric triangle, zero outside [-2,2]).

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The probability of error is .

Official answer: 0.12 to 0.14Source: Official answer key, GATE 2018 EC (IIT Guwahati)

  1. The noise pdf is a symmetric triangle on with peak at . Its area is , so it is a valid pdf.

  2. The two sides are for and for .

  3. With threshold , the detector decides if and if .

  4. If , then and an error occurs when , that is . If , then and an error occurs when , that is .

  5. This is also the area of the small triangle with base and height .

  6. The pdf is symmetric about , so .

KEY IDEA

With a zero threshold, an error needs the noise to push the received sample across zero. For that means , and for it means . Each tail probability is the area of a small triangle under the noise pdf.

WATCH OUT FOR

Using the Gaussian formula, or integrating from the signal level out to incorrectly. Another slip is taking the tail height at as instead of , which gives for the tail area.
