A microbial culture (following Monod model for growth) has a maximum specific growth rate of 0.1 h, Monod constant of 1 mg L and endogenous decay rate of 0.1 day. At limiting substrate concentration of 23 g L, the net specific growth rate will be ________ day. (rounded off to one decimal place)
GATE 2026 BT Q.55: solution and answer
Answer and solution
ANSWER
The net specific growth rate is 2.3 day^-1.
Official answer: 2.2 to 2.4Source: Official answer key, GATE 2026 BT (IIT Guwahati)
Monod model: , where is the specific growth rate, is the maximum specific growth rate, is the Monod constant and is the limiting substrate concentration.
Put and in the same units: .
Because , the culture grows at essentially .
Convert to per day so it can be combined with the decay rate, which is given per day: .
With endogenous decay, the net specific growth rate is , where is the endogenous decay rate.
KEY IDEA
Net specific growth rate = Monod growth rate minus the endogenous decay rate, . First put every quantity in the same units: S and K_s both in mg L^-1, and both rates in day^-1. Here S is 23000 times K_s, so the Monod term is almost exactly .
WATCH OUT FOR
Mixing units. If you subtract 0.1 day^-1 from 0.1 h^-1 you get zero. If you use S = 23 with K_s = 1 without converting g to mg, you get 0.0958 h^-1 and a net rate near 2.2 day^-1, which only lands in the range by luck. The right way is to convert S to 23000 mg L^-1 and mu_max to 2.4 day^-1, then subtract k_d.
