GATE 2024 · BTQ.58 · 2 marks · NAT

E. coli is inoculated in a shake flask containing nutrient rich medium. The initial number of viable cells in the medium is . After few hours, the number of viable cells is . Assuming cell divides by binary fission, the number of generations that have taken place is ________ (rounded off to the nearest integer).

Answer and solution

ANSWER

About 13 generations have taken place ().

Official answer: 13.00 to 14.00Source: Official answer key, GATE 2024 BT (IISc Bengaluru)

  1. In binary fission every cell splits into two, so each generation doubles the number of viable cells. After generations: , where is the initial and the final number of viable cells (no cell death is assumed, since both counts are of viable cells).

  2. Take base-10 logarithms of both sides and solve for : .

  3. Substitute and : , so .

  4. Rounded to the nearest integer: generations. (Sanity check: and , so a -fold increase lies between 13 and 14 doublings, closer to 13.)

KEY IDEA

Binary fission doubles the population every generation, so and . Only the fold-increase matters, not the absolute counts.

WATCH OUT FOR

Using the final count alone () and forgetting the initial cells. Other slips are mixing logarithm bases (for example , or ), and dividing the fold-increase by 2 instead of taking of it.
