  1. (A)

Turing machine halts on all input strings in

  2. (B)

Turing machine accepts all input strings in

  3. (C)

Turing machine rejects all input strings in

  4. (D)

Turing machine accepts all input strings in and rejects all input strings in

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The correct option is (D): accepts all strings in and rejects all strings in .

Official answer: DSource: Official answer key, GATE 2026 CS2 (IIT Guwahati)

  1. A Turing machine decides if it halts on every input , accepting when and rejecting when .

  2. Check (A): halting on all inputs is necessary but not sufficient. A machine that halts everywhere but accepts the wrong strings decides some other language, not .

  3. Check (B): accepting every string of only gives . may also accept strings outside , or loop on them. This is at best a recognising condition.

  4. Check (C): rejecting every string of says nothing about strings in . could reject them or loop on them.

  5. Check (D): accepts every string of and rejects every string of . Every input in lies in or in its complement, so every input gets a definite accept or reject. Hence halts on all inputs and , which is exactly the definition of deciding .

  6. Rejecting a string means halting in the reject state. So (D) already contains both halting on all inputs and correct classification of every string. Only (D) is equivalent to the assertion.

KEY IDEA

A decider for halts on every input and gives the right verdict on each: accept inside , reject outside . Only a condition that covers both and its complement, with a definite verdict on each, is equivalent to deciding.

WATCH OUT FOR

Choosing (A) because a decider halts on all inputs. Halting everywhere does not make the machine decide , because it may accept or reject the wrong strings. Choosing (B) confuses deciding with recognising, where the machine may loop on strings outside .
