ISRO 2025 · CSQ.79 · 1 mark · MCQ

Consider the deterministic finite-state automaton (DFA) below over the alphabet {a,b}. The state with a small incoming arrow is the initial state, while a double circle state denotes a final state. The number of states in the MINIMAL DFA for the language accepted by this DFA is:

Figure description

A DFA with three states. State P (single circle, non-final) is the initial state, with an incoming arrow from the left, placed top-left. State Q (double circle, final) is top-right. State R (double circle, final) is bottom-centre. Transitions: P --a--> Q; P --b--> R; Q has a self-loop labelled b; Q --a--> R; R has a self-loop labelled a,b.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The minimal DFA has 2 states, so the answer is option (b).

Official answer: BSource: ISRO's final answer key of 15 May 2026

  1. Name the states: (initial, non-final), (final) and (final). The transitions are , , , , and .

  2. Minimisation starts by separating final from non-final states. This gives the groups and .

  3. Check whether and can be told apart. Two states are distinguishable only if some string takes one of them to a final state and the other to a non-final state.

  4. From , every string leads back to , which is final. So accepts every string, including .

  5. From , input stays in and input goes to . Both are final, so every string from ends in a final state. also accepts every string.

  6. So and are equivalent and merge into one final state with a loop on .

  7. is non-final and the merged state is final, so distinguishes them. stays separate.

  8. The language is , the set of non-empty strings over . The minimal DFA has 2 states: a non-final start state and a final state looping on .

KEY IDEA

Merge states that are equivalent. Here every final state leads only to final states, so all of them accept every string and collapse into one. The minimal DFA is the start state plus that single accepting state.

WATCH OUT FOR

Counting the three drawn states as the answer without testing whether the two final states are equivalent. Both accept every string, so they merge.
