The period of the discrete-time signal described by the equation below is ________ (Round off to the nearest integer).
GATE 2023 EE Q.49: solution and answer
Answer and solution
ANSWER
The fundamental period is .
Official answer: 48Source: Official answer key, GATE 2023 EE (IIT Kanpur)
The constant has the same value for every , so it does not affect the period. The phase shifts ( and ) and the amplitudes ( and ) do not affect it either. Only the two frequencies matter.
Periodicity test for : the sequence is periodic only when is a rational number. Write the fraction in lowest terms; its denominator is the fundamental period.
First term: , so . This is already in lowest terms, so . (Note that is not an integer, so it cannot be the period of a discrete-time signal.)
Second term: , so , which gives .
For a sum of periodic sequences, a common period must be a multiple of every individual period, so the smallest one is the least common multiple:
Check: and . Both are integer multiples of . Any smaller would have to be a multiple of both and , and is the smallest such number, so .
KEY IDEA
For a discrete-time sinusoid , write as a fraction in lowest terms; the period is the denominator . For a sum of sinusoids, the period is the LCM of the individual periods. Constants, amplitudes and phase shifts play no part.
WATCH OUT FOR
Using the continuous-time formula gives for the first term. That is not an integer, so it cannot be a discrete-time period; you must go on to the smallest integer . A second mistake is to cancel the wrongly and take from the denominator of , which gives instead of 48.
