GATE 2023 EE question 31: Two plots against t.Tap to open full size
Figure from the GATE 2023 EE paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

Two plots against t. Upper plot, y(t): zero for t < 1; at t = 1 it jumps down to -2, then rises linearly (slope 1) through 0 at t = 3 to +2 at t = 5 (a dotted line marks the level 2 back to the vertical axis); at t = 5 it drops vertically to 0 and stays zero for t > 5. Vertical axis ticks -3 to 3, horizontal ticks -3 to 7. Lower plot, x(t): a rectangular pulse of height 1 from t = -1 to t = 1, zero elsewhere. Vertical axis ticks -3 to 3, horizontal ticks -3 to 3.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

. The peak value is , reached when the width-2 window covers exactly the positive part of on .

Official answer: 4Source: Official answer key, GATE 2023 EE (IIT Kanpur)

  1. Read the signals from the figure: for and zero elsewhere. for and zero elsewhere, so it runs from at , through at , to at .

  2. Convolving with a unit rectangular pulse gives a moving integral over a window of width 2. Substitute : So is the area under inside the window .

  3. Differentiate with the Leibniz rule: . The maximum is where this changes sign from positive to negative.

  4. Full overlap, (the window lies inside ): . Also which rises to .

  5. Trailing edge, (the upper end of the window has passed ): , and which falls from at to at .

  6. Leading edge, : so no larger value is possible there. for and , because the window then misses completely.

  7. So has its global maximum at . Here the window is , which covers exactly the positive part of . Therefore .

KEY IDEA

Convolving with a unit rectangular pulse on gives a sliding-window integral: . is largest when the window holds the most positive area and none of the negative area. is positive only on , and that interval is exactly as wide as the window, so the best window is . Its centre gives . The same result follows from changing from to negative at .

WATCH OUT FOR

Answering because that is where peaks. The maximum of a convolution is not at the peak of either signal: at the window loses the area on , so . Another mistake is answering , the centre of 's support. There the positive and negative areas cancel and . A third error is to use the window or instead of . That forgets the pulse is centred at the origin and moves the answer by one second.
