Q.No. 54 An algorithm was designed to find globins in protein sequence databases. A database which has 78 globin sequences was searched using this algorithm. The algorithm retrieved 72 sequences of which only 65 were globins. The sensitivity of this algorithm is ________ % (round off to 2 decimal places).

See the question in the paper

Answer and solution

ANSWER

Sensitivity = 65/78 × 100 = 83.33%.

Official answer: 83.30 to 83.40Source: Official answer key, GATE 2020 BT (IIT Delhi)

  1. Step 1 — Identify the sensitivity formula. Sensitivity (also called recall or the true positive rate) is defined as: where "Total Actual Positives" is the number of real positive cases that exist in the dataset being searched — not the number the algorithm happened to flag.

  2. Step 2 — Identify the values from the question. The database actually contains 78 globin sequences in total — this is the ground-truth positive count. The algorithm retrieved 72 sequences, but only 65 of those retrieved sequences were true globins. So the true positives, TP = 65, and the total actual positives = 78.

  3. Step 3 — Apply the formula.

  4. Step 4 — Compute and round. Rounded to 2 decimal places:

KEY IDEA

Sensitivity (recall / true positive rate) in a bioinformatics search is the fraction of all real positives in the database that the algorithm successfully retrieves.

WATCH OUT FOR

Using the number of retrieved sequences (72) as the denominator instead of the total actual globins present in the database (78) — this computes precision (65/72 = 90.28%), not sensitivity.
