Answer and solution
ANSWER
There are 10 such bijections.
Official answer: 10Source: Official answer key, GATE 2026 DA (IIT Guwahati)
The condition for every says , so is its own inverse. A bijection with this property is an involution, and every cycle of its cycle decomposition has length 1 (a fixed point) or length 2 (a swapped pair).
Count by the number of swapped pairs. The elements not in any pair are fixed points.
: every element is fixed, so is the identity. This gives bijection.
: choose the two elements that swap in ways. The other two are fixed. This gives bijections.
: split the 4 elements into two unordered pairs. Choose the partner of element in ways; the remaining two elements form the other pair. This equals , so there are bijections.
A 3-cycle or a 4-cycle is excluded, because applying twice would not return every element to itself. Each of those has order 3 or 4 rather than dividing 2.
Total: .
Check with the involution recurrence . Element is either fixed ( ways) or paired with one of the other elements ( ways). With and this gives and .
KEY IDEA
means is an involution, so its cycles have length 1 or 2. Count permutations by the number of 2-cycles: .
WATCH OUT FOR
Counting only the permutations made of swaps and forgetting the identity and the single-swap cases. Another slip is counting the two-pair case as instead of , which counts each unordered pair of pairs twice.
