Answer and solution

ANSWER

The correct matching is P-3, Q-4, R-1, S-2, which is option (A).

Official answer: ASource: Official answer key, GATE 2022 BT (IIT Kharagpur)

  1. Match each medium component with its role one at a time.

  2. P, hydrocortisone, is a glucocorticoid steroid hormone. It is added to media for some cell types, where it promotes attachment, spreading and differentiation. So P matches 3 (Hormone).

  3. Q, fibronectin, is an adhesive extracellular matrix glycoprotein. It coats culture surfaces, and anchorage-dependent cells bind it through integrins. So Q matches 4 (Cell attachment).

  4. R, epidermal growth factor, binds the EGF receptor tyrosine kinase and stimulates cell division. So R matches 1 (Mitogen).

  5. S, riboflavin, is vitamin , a precursor of the cofactors FMN and FAD. So S matches 2 (Vitamin).

  6. The combined matching is P-3, Q-4, R-1, S-2, which is option (A).

  7. Check the other options. (B) calls EGF a vitamin and riboflavin a mitogen. (C) and (D) call hydrocortisone a cell attachment factor and fibronectin a hormone. Each of these contradicts at least one match above, so only (A) is correct.

KEY IDEA

In mammalian cell culture media, hormones such as hydrocortisone, growth factors such as EGF (mitogens), attachment factors such as fibronectin, and vitamins such as riboflavin each have a distinct role. Match each component by what it does for the cells.

WATCH OUT FOR

Confusing a growth factor with a vitamin or hormone, or assuming that a steroid like hydrocortisone helps cells attach to the surface because it affects spreading. Attachment is provided by matrix proteins such as fibronectin, not by hormones.
