Figure description

A table with three columns (Process, Arrival Time in ms, Execution Time in ms) and three rows: P1 arrives at 6 and executes 24; P2 arrives at 0 and executes 3; P3 arrives at 3 and executes 3.

  1. (A)

Average Turnaround time 30 ms and Average Waiting Time 4.5 ms

  2. (B)

Average Turnaround time 13 ms and Average Waiting Time 3 ms

  3. (C)

Average Turnaround time 10 ms and Average Waiting Time 0 ms

  4. (D)

Average Turnaround time 24 ms and Average Waiting Time 0 ms

Answer and solution

ANSWER

Option (c): average turnaround time and average waiting time .

Official answer: CSource: ISRO's final answer key of 15 May 2026

  1. FCFS serves processes in order of arrival time, not in the order they are listed. The arrival order is P2 (at ), P3 (at ), P1 (at ).

  2. Gantt chart: P2 runs from to , P3 from to , P1 from to . The CPU is never idle, because each process arrives no later than the moment the previous one finishes.

  3. Turnaround time completion time arrival time. P2: . P3: . P1: .

  4. Average turnaround time .

  5. Waiting time turnaround time execution time. P2: . P3: . P1: . Every process starts the moment it arrives.

  6. Average waiting time .

  7. The average turnaround time is and the average waiting time is , which is option (c). Option (a) quotes , the sum of the turnaround times, instead of their mean, and its waiting time does not match the schedule. Options (b) and (d) also do not match the schedule.

KEY IDEA

FCFS orders processes by arrival time. Build the Gantt chart, then use turnaround completion arrival and waiting turnaround burst.

WATCH OUT FOR

Serving the processes in the order listed in the table (P1 first), instead of by arrival time, which gives large waiting times. Another slip is quoting the total turnaround time (30) without dividing by the number of processes.
