GATE 2026 · DAQ.11 · 1 mark · MCQ

For a classification problem, Principal Component Analysis (PCA) has been used to reduce the dimensionality of a feature space from 100 to 10.

Which of the following options is true about the angle between the first and the tenth principal components?

  1. (A)

  2. (B)

  3. (C)

  4. (D)

See the question in the paper

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The angle between the first and tenth principal components is , option (B).

Official answer: BSource: Official answer key, GATE 2026 DA (IIT Guwahati)

  1. The principal components of the 100 features are the unit eigenvectors of the covariance matrix (real and symmetric), ordered by decreasing eigenvalue: has the largest eigenvalue and the tenth largest.

  2. A real symmetric matrix has an orthonormal set of eigenvectors (spectral theorem). Directly: if and with , then so , which gives .

  3. If some eigenvalues are repeated, the eigenvectors within a repeated eigenspace can still be chosen orthonormal, and PCA does choose them so. Hence the principal components are always mutually orthogonal.

  4. Therefore , so .

  5. Reducing the dimension from 100 to 10 only keeps the top 10 components and discards the other 90. It does not change the directions of the kept components, so they remain orthogonal and . This is option (B); (A), (C) and (D) all require a non-zero dot product or parallel vectors.

KEY IDEA

Principal components are eigenvectors of the symmetric covariance matrix, so they form an orthonormal set. Any two distinct components are perpendicular, whichever two you pick and however many you keep.

WATCH OUT FOR

Thinking that the first and the last retained components are somehow "far apart" or correlated, or that dimensionality reduction tilts the retained axes. PCA axes are always mutually orthogonal, and discarding components does not change that.
