Official answer: CSource: Official answer key, GATE 2018 IN (IIT Guwahati)
does not satisfy the equation (it would give ), so you can divide every term by : , which gives .
Square both sides using . The cross term is :
Square again using . The cross term is :
Check with an actual root: gives and , which add up to . The other root, , is the negative reciprocal of the first, so it gives the same two numbers the other way round and the same sum.
So , which is option (C).
KEY IDEA
Divide the quadratic by to get , then square twice. Each squaring turns into plus or minus 2, because . You never have to solve for .
WATCH OUT FOR
Getting the sign of wrong. Dividing by gives , so , not . If you take , the first squaring gives , which is impossible for real and leads to , not any of the options. A second slip is forgetting the cross term when squaring, which gives 1 or 9 (options A and D) instead of 7.
