Answer and solution

ANSWER

The area under for is . The answer is option (D).

Official answer: DSource: Official answer key, GATE 2020 IN (IIT Delhi)

  1. The greatest integer (floor) function equals the integer for and jumps up by 1 at each integer. On its graph is three horizontal steps. All of them lie above the -axis (), so the area under is simply .

  2. Split the interval at the integers: , , . On these pieces , and . At the single point , , but a point has zero width and adds no area.

  3. Each step is a rectangle 1 unit wide, so its area equals its height: , and .

  4. Add the three rectangles:

  5. Quick check: the interval is 3 units wide. On we have , so the area is strictly more than . Apart from the single point , , so the area is strictly less than . That leaves only 4 and 6 among the options, and the exact sum is 6. The answer is option (D).

KEY IDEA

is a step function, constant between consecutive integers. Split at the integers. The area is then the sum of rectangles 1 unit wide whose heights are the step values 1, 2 and 3.

WATCH OUT FOR

Counting the value at as a fourth step and getting , when that point has zero width. Another slip is treating as and using the trapezoid . A third is taking just one step, or the width 3 alone, and picking 3.
