  1. (A)

  2. (B)

  3. (C)

  4. (D)

Answer and solution

ANSWER

Every eigenvalue of must be a root of , and both roots can occur, so the set of all possible eigenvalues is : option (C).

Official answer: CSource: Official answer key, GATE 2026 IN (IIT Guwahati)

  1. Eigenvalues satisfy any polynomial that annihilates the matrix. If with , then for every . Applying the given identity to : Since , every eigenvalue must satisfy .

  2. Find a root by inspection. At : , so is a factor.

  3. Factorise.

  4. Read off the candidates. The only roots are and (both real), so every eigenvalue of , real or complex, must be or . The value can never occur, which rules out option (A).

  5. Both values actually occur. Take . Then and , so , which is the given identity. This has both eigenvalues and , so neither nor alone is the full set. The set of all possible eigenvalues is , option (C).

KEY IDEA

If a polynomial satisfies , then every eigenvalue of satisfies , because for an eigenvector . So the eigenvalues can only be roots of . The given polynomial need not be the characteristic polynomial: and also satisfy it.

WATCH OUT FOR

Choosing (A) on the assumption that a matrix needs three different eigenvalues, when the cubic has a repeated root and is not a root at all. A second error is to treat the given cubic as the characteristic polynomial. Here that happens to give the same set, but the reasoning is wrong, since also satisfies the identity and has only the eigenvalue .
