Answer and solution

ANSWER

The minimum number of colours needed to edge-colour is .

Official answer: 7Source: Official answer key, GATE 2020 CS (IIT Delhi)

  1. has vertices: the parts , of , and joined to all seven of them.

  2. Degrees: , , . So .

  3. Lower bound: the edges at share the endpoint , so they need distinct colours. Hence .

  4. Upper bound: first edge-colour with the four colours by giving the colour . At the four edges get , which are all different. At the three edges get , which are all different. So this colouring is proper.

  5. Vertex uses and misses colour . Give that colour. Then get the four different colours , and each still has all its edges in different colours.

  6. Each already uses all of . Colour with the three new colours . These differ from each other and from the colours on the edges , so the colours at are all different. Each sees its four old colours plus one new colour, so it is also proper.

  7. This is a proper edge-colouring with colours, so . Together with the lower bound, .

KEY IDEA

The vertex has degree , which forces at least colours. Then build a -colouring directly. Colour with colours so that each misses a different colour. Give those missing colours to the edges . The three edges take three new colours.

WATCH OUT FOR

Using because is not bipartite. Vizing's theorem only says is or . Here an explicit colouring shows colours are enough, so is Class 1.
