Answer and solution

ANSWER

The minimum number of tables is 3 (option D): one each for A and B, with R1 folded into B, plus one for R2.

Official answer: DSource: ISRO's final answer key of 15 May 2026

  1. Each entity set with only simple, single-valued attributes maps to one table, so and need one table each: 2 tables. (The question says the relationships are "between M and N", but it describes them as running from to , so and stand for and .)

  2. A many-to-many relationship cannot be stored as a foreign key on either side, because a row on one side relates to many rows on the other. therefore needs its own table holding the keys of and .

  3. A one-to-many relationship needs no table of its own. The key of the 'one' side () is added as a foreign key to the 'many' side (), so merges into table .

  4. This merge is allowed even though also links and , because and are separate relationships with separate meanings. carries the foreign key for , and is kept in its own table.

  5. Minimum total: , (with the foreign key for ) and the table for , which makes tables.

  6. Option (a) 4 gives a separate table, which is not the minimum. Option (b) 2 leaves nowhere to store the many-to-many . Option (c) 6 is more than any sensible mapping needs. The answer is (d).

KEY IDEA

One-to-many relationships fold into the 'many' side as a foreign key. Many-to-many relationships need their own table. Entities each get a table.

WATCH OUT FOR

Giving every relationship its own table and answering 4, or forgetting that the many-to-many relationship needs a separate table and answering 2.
