Answer and solution

ANSWER

Option (A): AD, ED and CD are the only candidate keys of R.

Official answer: ASource: Official answer key, GATE 2026 DA (IIT Guwahati)

  1. Attribute appears on no right-hand side of , so no other attribute can derive it and belongs to every candidate key. Attribute appears on no left-hand side, so it is never needed to derive anything and belongs to no candidate key.

  2. Every candidate key is therefore together with a subset of . Since , alone is not a key.

  3. : gives . Then gives . So is a key.

  4. : gives . Then gives . So is a key.

  5. : gives . Then gives . Then gives . So is a key.

  6. Each of , , is minimal: removing an attribute leaves a single attribute, and , , do not contain (so none is a key), while . Any other candidate key must contain plus at least one of (and not ), so it contains one of , , and would not be minimal.

  7. Hence the candidate keys are exactly , and , which is option (A). Options (B), (C) and (D) are false: (B) omits , and (C) and (D) name , or alone as keys, but and never contain .

KEY IDEA

First classify attributes: one that never appears on a right-hand side must be in every key, and one that never appears on a left-hand side is in no key. Then take attribute closures of the remaining combinations and keep the minimal ones.

WATCH OUT FOR

Treating , or as keys because and look like they reach everything. These never derive , which appears on no right-hand side, so and alone cannot be keys. Another slip is stopping after finding and and missing .
