Answer and solution

ANSWER

The integral equals , which is option (C).

Official answer: CSource: ISRO's revised and final answer key of 16 February 2024

  1. The Nyquist criterion rests on the argument principle, which follows from Cauchy's residue theorem. For a function , the integral that is evaluated around a closed contour is that of its logarithmic derivative, . The options write the integrand loosely as , so each option is read as the value of this integral, , around the closed contour.

  2. At a zero of order 1 at , write with . Then , which has a simple pole at with residue .

  3. At a simple pole of at , write with . Then , so the residue is . A pole or zero of order gives and in the same way.

  4. Cauchy's residue theorem says the contour integral equals times the sum of the residues inside the contour. The zeros contribute and the poles contribute , so

  5. Since , the integral equals times the number of counter-clockwise encirclements of the origin by the image of the contour in the plane. This number is therefore , that is, zeros minus poles.

  6. Compare with the options. Option A has no count of poles or zeros. Option B, , has the sign reversed. Option D, , counts only the poles and gives them a positive sign. Only option C, , matches.

KEY IDEA

Each zero inside the contour adds to the residue sum of and each pole adds , so the contour integral is times (zeros minus poles).

WATCH OUT FOR

Reversing the sign and writing poles minus zeros. In the Nyquist plot the encirclement count is , and the integral carries the same order: zeros first, then poles subtracted.
